Big Nose Restaurant

Kuala Lumpur - The silkair flight into KL landed late and when I reach the immigration counter, there was a long queue of passengers.  Many of them were Arabs coming to KL to avoid their hot summer and having a long vacation.  On clock work, I took the luggauge cleared customs and took the KLIA to Sentral station.

Le Meridien Hotel is undergoing massive renovation at the reception area and therefore I had to check-in at B3 instead of Level 1.   I was told the renovation would be completed by end of October 2012.

For dinner, we went to Big Nose Restaurant off Jalan Kuchai Lama.

We chose the Kerai Fish which is a local fish.

Kerai Fish - the big fish on the left

Infamous Tahu Otah dish
The Otah is snugged between 2 slices of Tahu cooked with slices of petai (bitter beans).

You can see the Otah between slices of Tahu
Mantis Prawn fried with salted egg
The Mantis Prawn fried with salted egg was crispy on the outside, salty due to the salted egg and on the inside succulent and fresh.   This is a very delicious dish.

Not sure what's the name of this vegetable but it's my first time tasting it and it's good.  Stir fried with whole pieces of garlic.

Pork trotters tendons
This dish is new to me and it's Pork Trotters tendons cooked with Chinese wine and chilli.  The aroma is rich in wine and the tasted spicy due to the chilli.  More bones than meat, if you can call tendons 'meat'.  This is close to chicken feet cooked Cantonese style at Tim Sum (Yam Char) restaurant.

Steamed Kerai Fish Cantonese style
The Kerai Fish was served with their scales still on - of course it cannot be eaten so I wonder why the restaurant does not just remove them before serving.  The Cantonese style involves just good quality light Soya Sauce topped with garnishing of spring onions and Chinese coriander.   This is also my first time eating Kerai Fish and it's definitely fresh but there are lots of bones.   Caution when eating this fish with it's many bones and I will definitely not order this fish again.

As our stomachs still have room for one more dish - I ordered the steamed chicken garnished with lots of chopped spring onions and garlic.

Kuala Lumpur - Donny drove Edward and I to Mid-Valley for lunch and as we alight the escalator we came across this Japanese restaurant.  The food is very good and fresh similiar to what I tasted in Tokyo.

Address: Yuzu Japanese Restaurant - 3rd Floor, The Garden, Mid Valley City.
If google 'Yuzu Japanese Restaurant Malaysia' there are many good reviews on this restaurant too..

Klang for seafood

Klang - Lesley drove for over an hr to Klang for their famous and affordable seafood.   This is outside of Kuala Lumpur and is a predominantly a Chinese town.   Many shop houses and factories own by Chinese bosses are based here, also because it's near the port for easy shipment and transhipment.

The famous Klang seafood restaurant
Stir fried Tang hoon noodles with clams (La-la)

Bamboo Clams
Steam mud crabs
Marmite mud crabs
What's Marmite?

Found only in commonwealth countries like UK, Australia, Singapore and Malaysia.  Marmite is a bread spread from a yeast extract.   You either like it or hate it.   Malaysia seafood restaurant are inventive and found creative ways to cook crabs.  Here we have an example of Stir fried crabs cooked with marmite.   You can really taste the marmite in the crabs and it's good.

This is what fresh bamboo clams looks like...

Delicious Char Siew

Petaling Jaya - Met up with Donny and Edward adn we went for lunch at Oversea Chinese Restaurant for their famous Char Siew (roasted pork).  This roasted pork is so delicious is simply melts in your mouth.

Rush to Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur - Yesterday, I got a call from my customer to come to KL for an urgent meeting and started to book my flight.  Fortunately, there were plenty of seats still available.  I think with the opening up of the Singapore/KL air, more carriers were able to ply this route.  New carriers to this route are SilkAir, TigerAir, JetStar and many more.  So, I flew SQ as there are still seats available.  It will be a busy and long day as I will be flying back the next day.

The Limo taxi drove like a Ferari to my Hotel in PJ Hilton @ 140km/hr - it was fast but the ride was smooth.  I normally take the KLIA express but time constraint decided to take the taxi as it's a direct route to the Hotel.

I had pizza (Seafood + Pizza) lunch with my customer and it was not tasty.  The crust tasted like hard biscuit and the ingredients were cold.  I asked the waiter for parmeasan cheese and it was a long wait - by which time, we had already finish half of both the pizzas.  What a disappointment....

After 2 further meetings, I met Donny and Edward for dinner at Jaya 2 for Thai food.  The food is good but the portions were small.  It was a long night with more discussion that followed.   We later adjourned to Big Foot for a 1hr foot and shoulder massage.   The masseur is usually male - the massage is painful at time but after that you will much refresh and you can feel the muscle knots untangled.

High speed WiFi

Kuala Lumpur - I am on the KLIA express typing this blog on my iPhone and the Internet access is good and best of all is free.  Left the Sentral station at 4pm and should reach the airport in 28 minutes.

Train ride is great and it is fuss free.  In the news are plans to build a high speed rail from Nanning, China passing through Hanoi in Vietnam, Vientiane in Laos, Cambodia’s Phnom Penh, Thailand’s Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia on its way to Singapore

Lo Hei - 12 Steps to enjoy Yu Sheng

Kuala Lumpur - It is this time of the year, where shouts of congratulations, success are mentioned to one another...as we dug into our delicious Yu Sheng.  This is a dish invented in Singapore and Malaysia and enjoyed but many chinese families around the world.

The rituals
Yusheng in chinese with yu means "fish" but sounds to another chinese word that means "abundance", while sheng literally means "raw" but sounds appropriately, it means "life". Thus Yusheng implies "abundance of wealth and long life". In Cantonese, it is known as lo sheng with lo also meaning "tossing up good fortune". The tossing action is called lo hei, which means to "rise" (hei), again a reference to a thriving business and thus its popularity with businessmen during the New Year.

Step 1: All at the table offer New Year greetings.
Words mentioned: Gong xi fa cai meaning "congratulations for your wealth" or wan shi ru yi meaning "may all your wishes be fulfilled".

Step 2: Fish, symbolising abundance or excess through the year, is added.
Words mentioned: Nian nian you yu and you yu you sheng.

Step 3: The pomelo is added over the fish, adding both luck and auspicious value.
Words mentioned: Da ji da li.

Step 4: Pepper is then dashed over the ingredients in the hope of attracting more money and valuables.
Words mentioned: Zhao cai jin bao.

Step 5: Then oil is poured, circling the ingredients to increase all profits 10,000 times and to encourage money to flow in from all directions.
Words mentioned: Yi ben wan li and cai yuan guang jin.

Step 6: Carrots are added to the fish, indicating blessings of good luck.
Words mentioned: Hong yun dang tou.

Step 7: Shredded green radish is placed on the fish, symbolising eternal youth.
Words mentioned: Qing chun chang zhu.

Step 8: Shredded white radish is added for prosperity in business and promotion at work.
Words mentioned: Feng sheng shui qi and bu bu gao sheng.

Step 9: The condiments are finally added. First, peanut crumbs are dusted on the dish, symbolising a household filled with gold and silver. As an icon of longevity, peanuts also symbolise eternal youth.
Words mentioned: Jin yin man wu.

Step 10: Sesame seeds quickly follow symbolising a flourishing business.
Words mentioned: Sheng yi xing long.

Step 11: Deep-fried flour crisps in the shape of golden pillows are then added with wishes that literally translate to mean the whole floor would be filled with gold.
Words: Pian di huang jin.

Step 12: All toss the salad an auspicious seven times with loud shouts of lo hei and other auspicious New Year wishes.
Words: Lo hei which is Cantonese for "tossing luck".

The ingredients are mixed by pushing them toward the centre, an encouragement to push on the good luck of all at the table.

Late, Late, Late

Kuala Lumpur - I slept soundly on the plane coming over to Kuala Lumpur.   Last week was a long week for me - organizing the Tokyo conference.  The flight is short just shy of 45 minutes and was only woken up by the announcement of the pilot that we are landing soon.

I had to walk 15 minutes to the shuttle bus bound for the arrival terminal because the Aerotrain is temporarily closed for upgrading.

From the KLIA website I gather that the KLIA Aerotrain is temporarily unavailable from 1 November 2010 to 15 March 2011 for upgrading works. To ensure smooth transfer of passengers between the Satellite Building and the Contact Pier, continuous shuttle busses are scheduled around the clock.

When I reached the arrival terminal, it was crowded and the queue was snaking an endless bend.    There was this man with middle eastern features standing behind me trying to sneak in front of me.  I am really puzzzle as I was just in front of him.  He tried many times but finally gave up when just stood right in front of him and cut him off.   Murmur some foreign words and quietly took his place behind me.   I have never encountered Middle Eastern people but it seems to meet the profile hearing from my family members and friends.

As the immigation lady open new lanes, I rushed over to 2 new lanes and managed to clear immigration in a breeze.  Got my bags onto the limo taxi at 10:45am and off to Hilton PJ Hotel.  It was a quick ride and reached at about 11:30am - I was upgraded this time to a suite.  The bathroom is as big as my room + bathroom in Tokyo.

Lesley was waiting for me in front and off we rush to our appointment - we were late due to unforeseeen circumstances.

For lunch at Pan cafe, near my customer office @ Bukit Jalil - I had Nasi Lemak.  In Kuala Lumpur, it is called a National dish,  also a national heritage of Malaysia.

Nasi Lemak is a Malay word and steep in Malay culture.  The name is derived from the cooking process whereby rice is soaked in coconut cream and then the mixture steamed.  We add pandan leaves whilst it is steaming to give it a fragrant aroma.  Some restaurants add ginger and lemon grass to give an additional fragrance.
Traditionally, this comes as a platter of food wrapped in banana leaf, with cucumber slices, small dried ikan bilis, roasted peanuts, hard boiled egg, and hot spicy sauce (sambal) at its core. But now adays, the food platter is serve on a plate.

Nasi Lemak is widely eaten in Malaysia as breakfast, noon or evening, making it possible for the dish to be eaten all day.

In Singapore, we also eat it for Breakfast, lunch or dinner but it is definitely not our national dish but it's an economical dish and eaten sparringly as it has lots of 'cholesterol' enhancing properties.

Hilton KL Sentral

Kuala Lumpur - My wife tried to book the taxi today and to no avail and so she said go down and hail the taxi from the main road of which I manage to get one to reach the airport on time.  The plane arrived on time - via the KLIA and on arrival at Sentral station it was nice to be met by the concierge of the Hotel which had a Hotel shuttle bus and save me time lugging the bags pass escalators, road crossing and lifts.   The shuttle bus took me straight to the Lobby of the Hilton KL.

Hilton KL is not my ususal hotel and I stayed becaue it is nearer to the seminar in Mid-Valley.   The service at Hilton KL is not very good and the personnel are very curt in their response.   I would stay at PJ Hilton Hotel as it is a much friendly hotel and the staff knows me well.

Lunch was at the Hotel restaurant and the buffet spread was wide @ RM99 per head.  For that price it would be worth going out for lunch....

But the view from the executive lounge on the 33th floor is spectacular - similiar so from the window of my room.

Dinner we have seafood and it was good called 'Panti Seafood'.

After Dinner, we went for some Durian as it is the season.    The Durian stall is called 'Donald' and near SS2 Petaling Jaya - tried the Top Durian "Mow San Huang' and also the new breed 'D4'.

Authentic Taiwanese Food in KL

Kuala Lumpur - We lost track of time in our discussion at the Hilton Petaling Jaya executive club. This is one of best Hitlon Club floor that I have visited. The receptionist and waiters were professional, polite and patient, there was a good spread of food for executive floor guests. I stayed at a normal Hilton floor but as a Gold Hilton member, I am extended the priviledges to enter the Hitlon Club floor.

It was around 9pm, my good friends brought me to dinner at Petaling Jaya, this is the location of the most authentic and famous Malaysian food. This restaurant, new Formosa restaurant serves authentic Taiwanese food located @ 46, Jalan SS2/24, 47300 Petaling Jaya. Contact: 603-7875-1894. The food is really good and tasty and the price is reasonable, just over RM$130 for 3 of us.
Die die must try -
Sour Plum Juice,
Stir-Fry Buttered Eel,
This desert is very unique - Formosa Special Sweet Yam. The yam cubes were first deep fried and coated with a layer of melted caramel with sesame seeds. The cubes were then transferred to a basin of ice water for the caramel to cool and harden. Interestingly, the yam cubes were not wet at all when taken out from the water and they’re still piping hot at the inside. It was very delicious - in Singapore we have similiar but with Banana. I just love it....

Nuisance knock

Kuala Lumpur - 'knock', 'knock'....I open the door "your shower has problem". No!@#~ 6am......I went back to bed.

I had lunch with my parter at Tony Roma's restaurant @ Mid Valley - which is famous for the ribs. Because they are Halal certified they don't serve 'pork and thus no 'baby back' ribs - this is their signature dish. I had lamp chops - it was just average. They provide free flow of soft drinks unlike Tony Roma's restaurant in Singapore. Many Singapore restaurants do not provide free flow of soft drinks.

KL new Hotel

Kuala Lumpur - Checked into KL newest hotel in Mid Valley - The Gardens Hotel & Residences. Everything of this hotel 'smells' new - you really have a good feeling.....until, their free internet access does not work. I tried many times using all the software and called their IT managers with the same answer - "we do not know what is the problem". I told them that their DHCP server is having problem and not giving me an IP address or there is a cabling problem. When Donny came to my room and tested with his notebook same problem. The hotel changed to another room and the problem was fixed. Despite having this internet access problem, the hotel staff was very courteous and came up to my room many times to try to fix the problem.

Dinner was at Brother Kuan restaurant in Bandar Puteri Puchong, Puchong - this restaurant came highly recommended. We tried almost everything there is no the menu. Fishball soup (different from Singapore, not soft but with meat within); Roast Duck (this was really delicious served in a tray of herbal gravy), Roast Pork, BBQ Pork, etc...

Glorious seafood @ Damansara

Kuala Lumpur - Today I will be staying at Le Meridien KL Hotel located at Sentral. Just 28 minutes from KL International airport via the KLIA express. The rates of Le Meridien are RM570++ per night whilst at Hilton KL Hotel (next door) was RM$200 per night more. Well having stayed at both - the rooms at Hilton KL Hotel are much bigger and also their service is much better. Hilton KL Hotel has a concierge at the Sentral station that will help you with your baggage and checking in.

The last time I stayed at Le Meridien KL Hotel, there was a similiar concierge service but was told today by the front desk that they discontinue this service.

One of the reason I like about Sentral location, as the name implies - it's very central - all the trains run through this location - KLIA Express, Kotra, KL Express (formerly Putra) and LRT.

Dinner was at a remote location in Damansara @ a seafood restaurant called "Pantai Seafood Restaurant". The food is very fresh, very delicious and for 5 people it cost RM$380. The most expensive dish was the Mexican Geoduck prepared in Sashimi and cooked in soup costing RM$200 - not really worth that much though - maybe with the Mexican tag, the seafood restaurant can charge more. The most interesting dish was Marmite Crab. If my recollection is correct, Marmite is used as a spread on bread. I did asked many times, marmite? marmite crab? Ok, why not...let's try. It's not that bad actually but I still like other variants of crab dishes like salted egg crab, etc.

Roasted Duck @ Petaling Jaya

Petaling Jaya - I saw in a magazine about 3 famous roasted duck restaurant in Kuala Lumpur , but I have never been to any one of them. I decided to ask Donny and he replied the restaurant is always crowded...but strangely, I had a hankering for duck meat. So, we made a "beeline" to this famous duck restaurant that he knew of in Petaling Jaya.

Restaurant: Sunrise Roasted Duck restaurant
Located @ 31 Jalan 21/1, SEA Park, Petaling Jaya

Upon reaching, it was packed and the crowds kept pouring in. The restaurant ambience is by all standard looks old with tiled walls, plastic chairs and slopping looking attendants. To compensate this restaurant roasted duck is heavenly - the best I have ever tasted!

The roasted ducks are skillfully chopped up piping hot and served to customers. The duck meat is succulent and tasty. We order one whole duck and it cost M$40 each. This was the reason why customers keep coming back to this restaurant over and over again and don't mind the long queues everyday.

Bak Kut Teh @ Petaling Jaya

Kuala Lumpur - Arrived on time and I had already pre-paid my Hotel stay at Boulevard Hotel. A good class 4-star hotel that is new and clean. The rooms are well kept and that's one of the reason I am back again.

Donny arrived with his colleagues (Eunice and Donald) and together with Young Jin we hopped into his car for a sumptuous meal at...

Grandpa Bak Kut Teh restaurant - a very famous Bak Kut Teh restaurant in Petaling Jaya. The Bak Kut Teh has a strong herb aroma - the broth is thick and delicious. The Pork has definitely been cooked for many hours as the meat is tender and juicy.

What is Bak Kut Teh?
This is a Chinese dish and is very popular in Malaysia and Singapore. Literal translation means "Pork Bones Tea". The dish of meaty Pork ribs is served in soup of herbs and spices. The Malaysian Bak Kut Teh consist of more herbs whilst Singapore Bak Kut Teh has more spices especially pepper. The Bak Kut Teh is served with rice and often served with "You Tiao" (fried dough). The correct way is to dipped the "You Tiao" into the Bak Kut Teh and eaten.

It seems to be that many of the best no-frills restaurants are located in Petaling Jaya. Petaling Jaya is about 45 minutes away from KL.

I had 2 rounds of bowling @ Cosmic Bowl at Mid Valley Mall with my business partners. This is the first time I am bowling in this special effects lighting. The glow in the dark pins and bowling ball adds new excitement to the game. Lights go out, the pins light up and the bowling ball glows!

Shopping you can cruise

Kuala Lumpur
Do you know where you can cruise inside a shopping mall?

It is The Mines Shopping Fair and is the only shopping mall you can cruise via their water taxis. You can get from one point of the Lake to the other. Our partner, Zaki suggested that we go to the Mines Shopping Fair for lunch - it was interesting to have a small 'man-made' river in the middle of the shopping mall.

Nando's Chicken - was the restaurant we had lunch and it's a spanish restaurant - the food is good and tasty.

Looking from our table beside
the river, we were surprised to find a large number of fishes within it. The restaurant uses the fishes as their 'automatic food disposal' - the waiter chuck everything off the completed diner's plate into the river - chicken bones, rice, potatoes - everything and the fishes just gobbled them up. It is no wonder they are so fat and huge.

After the lunch - Zaki surprised me by booking a cruise around the Mines Resort - it was a cruise that I really enjoyed. There are 2 Lakes - the bigger North Lake and South Lake.

Phill, Zaki and me

Do you know what is the name of the tin mine that became the successful Mines Resort?

It was called Hong Fatt tin mind - the story started a hundred yeas ago when a Chinese immigrant Chan Wing came to Malaya and discovered tin ore ina site abandoned by Europeans earlier. This became the largest tine mine in the world. Mining in the area left a gaping hope 2 kilometres long a kilometer wide, and 200 metres deep. Gradually rain water began to fill the crevice and thus was the humble beginings of the two great lakes - North Lake and South Lake.

In 1988, Tan Sri Lee Kim Yew built Mines Resort City with the seven wonders of Malaysia which I took the water taxi to view this wonder.

The wonder of this cruise is experiencing the "Water Lock". The reason was that the two main lakes in the Mines Resort City are of different height levels (7m) - so the water lock was used to link the two lakes together. Both lakes are connected via a 1054 meter canal - the entire system took 1 1/2 years to build at a cost of RM15m.

The cruise cost RM25 took 1 hour and starts from Mines Shopping Fair moving towards to the North Lake. Since it is lower by 7 meters, the water lock will discharge the water in just 7 minutes (this system is similar to the Panama canal but on a much smaller scale) - 61,600 gallons of water is the amount of water in the water lock to be discharged or refilled.

While crossing the North Lake I passed by the Fatty Crab restaurant that I had dinner with Donny the last time. Not far away, the cruise captain stopped for a short while for us to look at the monitor lizard - there are so many breeding there.

It was a breather to a hectic business schedule..... thank you, Zaki.

Kuala Lumpur
SMART and smarter... Do you know what SMART stands for?

Becuase of the severe flooding in Klang valley on Sunday - it rained continuously for 6 hours which burst the banks the Klang and Gombak rivers; and flooded most of Klang valley at heights of 1-2 metres - the SMART project will be completed one week ahead of schedule.

SMART means "Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel"

Construction began in 2003 for SMART – the longest and most technologically advanced tunnel in Malaysia to date. The 13.2m diameter tunnel consists of a 9.7km stormwater bypass tunnel, with a 4km dual-deck motorway within the stormwater tunnel. The main purpose of SMART is to solve the problem of flash flooding in Kuala Lumpur and also to reduce traffic jams during the daily rush hour.

I rode once into the tunnel with Donny and it was impressive and it has three modes before converting the motorway into stormwater tunnel - it would not be pleasant to be caught at the conversion....LOL.

The SMART will work on a three-mode system:
  • MODE 1: Normal conditions. When there is low rainfall and no storm. The motorway section is opened to motorists

  • MODE 2: Moderate storm. The SMART system is activated and flood water is diverted into the bypass tunnel in the lower channel of the motorway tunnel. The upper channel will still be open to motorists.

  • MODE 3: Storm. The tunnel will be closed to motorists. Once all vehicles have vacated the tunnel, automatic water-tight gates are opened to allow flood water to pass through.

Mid Valley

Kuala Lumpur - Arrived on SQ with Phill to KL - and we quickly zipped past the 'taxi touts' on KLIA express straight into Sentral station. We were booked into Boulevard Hotel - a new hotel part of the IGB Corporation Group. A Malaysian conglomorate that includes many hotels including the Midvalley Megamall. The location of Mid Valley is strategically located between KL and PJ (Petaling Jaya).

Boulevard hotel - a four star hotel located just 2 minutes walk to the MidValley Megamall on the Ground floor. The rooms are neat and clean, has good internet access and the rates includes breakfast -at RM260 for deluxe room - I think it is a good rate.

At the Megamall, there are so many restaurants and shops on 5 floors - and I heard the megamall is developing to make this even bigger.

The Equire Kitchen (located on the ground floor of the mall) - $$ - Popular among locals for its homestyle Chinese food. The decor is fuss-free, clean and bright. Reasonably priced - tried their famous chicken rice but it is not as good as others I have tried.

Finnegan's Irish Pub and Restaurant (located also on outside ground floor of the mall) - $$ - Phill ordered Tiger Beer and we just ordered the same - I think Phill likes Tiger Beer compared to many Asian beers. Well...Tiger Beer will slowly be on US soil with their signed agreement Anheuser-Busch. Besides beers, Finnegan's had a good selection of Irish dishes - I had "Beef stew in Stout" - it was delicious.

Unique Seafood

Review: Hotel Renaissance
Friendly staff abound this hotel - each staff wears a smile readily it makes you feel very welcome. The hotel has a East Wing (formerly the New World Hotel) and West Wing. The hotel is also located a 5 minutes walk to the "Bukit Nanas" monorail - which is just across the road. You need to be extra careful crossing the road because the pedestrian lights does not turn green and you do not know when is the time to cross or not. So, I had to time the red light and green light to make my way across the road but had a little help from a taxi driver when crossing the road - he was waving me to cross. Also about 15-20 minutes walk to KLCC - taxi about RM$4-$10 depends on the type of taxi.

Restaurant:
Eden Village
@ Chulan Square - $$$$ - a western seafood and steak restaurant. Just not my type of seafood restaurant. This restaurant serves prawns, lobsters but not my favourite, crabs. Maybe too messy for a western diner? but one consolation is that I like their wild mushroom soup. At their entrance displayed frozen fishes, prawns and lobster but none of the live seafood as a typical seafood restaurant.

Unique Seafood @ Lot 9B, Jln Kemajuan, Sec 13, PJ - $$$ - upon entering you are met with the most awesome display of live seafood of different types of crabs, geoduck, abalone, prawns and fishes. For each variety you can choose the style of cooking - for crabs I chose for it to be cooked "Salted egg" style - it was my first time trying such a dish. It was deliciously cooked - KL is very innovative in their cooking unlike in Singapore, we only have steam, chilli or pepper crab. KL has steam, butter, sweet and sour, cheese (not tried yet) and now salted egg crab style. Geoduck was served sashimi style and also for those unadventurous they provide provide steamboat style. I recommend this restaurant for the ambience and good food but you need a KL friend to bring you there as the location can be very confusing - even for a taxi driver.
